So, if I didn't make it clear before, Taco Neck is my band. Well, sort of. It's an entity I created in order to make wierd(er) music. I still make beats and rap, but Taco Neck is my "art project". I feel it represents the music I listen to and the town that I live in.

The debut EP Tutorial will be available very soon (very, very soon) and features many of my super talented friends (Onry Ozzborn, Josh Martinez, Xperience, Smoke, Ceschi Ramos, Gold, iAME, and NyQwil). I thought I would release the instrumental album for free and let the music speak for itself. Then, hopefully you'll buy the album for all the great guests on it.

The Bomb Threat Tape (1995)

If ever there was an obscure, Oldominion related release this is it. In fact this would be the Holy Grail of such releases. This tape would not only serve as a launching pad for Oldominion artists Dialog (now Destro), NyQwil, and Snafu, it would also introduce the world to Shakespere (now Libretto), Bleek (now Pricy), and the world renowned Lifesavas.

I'm not exactly sure how many copies of this are out there but I know that it is rarely talked about or referenced anywhere. I feel that I would be doing Portland hip-hop a grave injustice if I didn't post this. To me it is the flagship release of mid 90's Portland hip-hop (along with DJ Wicked's first mixtape and Harsh Game For The People by Cool Nutz) and may never again shine like it did when I was a 16 year old kid, if the world were not to rediscover it.

If you haven't heard of Dark Time Sunshine yet get ready to be blown away.

DTS consists of: Cape Cowen (the ever prolific MC Onry Ozzborn) and Zavala (Chicago's best find since Barack Obama...*coughs*) . I literally wanted to quit making beats when I first heard Zavala.

This video is a three song medley of sorts. Doom, Go Team, and Wrong Kids all have their own story and setting. Christian Hansen goes all art-house on this one and knocks it out of the park.

...And, this album actually came out a while ago as a free release by Fake Four Inc. but I was waiting for the video to be released to do more of an all encompassing sort of blog entry thing. Candidt, Blak & Pegee13- What's On Your Mind?

I went up and kicked it in Seattle this past Friday night. Onry was doing a video shoot for Dark Time Sunshine (just wait...) and I wanted to participate. I hadn't been up there for years.

Man...it had been way too long. I forgot about that town. At least I forgot how much fun it can be...and how awesome their Hip-Hop scene is (no offense Portland).

I decided to post this song because it always represented Seattle to me. Meaning, this was the closest I would probably ever get to being "in" the Seattle Hip-Hop scene.

I gave Candidt this beat one weekend when he was down here in Portland and within hours of making the trip back up North he sent me his verse. I don't think that's ever happened to me. Candidt is that dude that makes things happen, and quickly.

He also enlisted NW legend Blak (of Silent Lambs Project) to add a verse. It's an honor to have collaborated with him, although I've never met him. I love his verse on this song.

It pains me to say it, but you will probably never hear a solo album from me. I have no excuses. It's just a conclusion I can make from having spent years in the game.
I think that I have some form of artistic A.D.D. Every project I fully delve into becomes a collection of songs that will inevitably sit on the back burner until the next project comes along. This blog is an attempt to work with this "disability" of sorts.

I once had a spacey art teacher who told me that the reason I can't finish anything is because I'm an Aries. Great. Now I can use that as an excuse (side note: Anax is an Aries too).

This is a track I made a while back during the height of the presidential primary last year. There was just so much stress at that point in time. Political stress. Evidently, there was enough stress for me to write a complete song (a very rare thing).

Times have changed, but I think most of the song lyrics still apply. I'm still stressed (even though my dude won). The world hasn't "changed" yet like it needs to. It it probably never will...

And sometimes that song has long enough breaks that I can loop. And if I'm lucky, really lucky, the song itself would have a great hook that I can interpret to my liking.

I was checking out their album a while back because I liked what I had previously heard from them, and it was produced by Danger Mouse (of whom I am a big fan of).

Oldominion-Zero

This is Zero. It was supposed to come out after One, and before Negative One and a Half, but it ended up as a free download on our label's website. It's called Zero because these songs were oldies by the time One came out. Thus the strange, non-sequential numbering system.

Anyways, I feel this collection really embodies what Oldominion was. Songs like "Eight Arms" and "Four Horsemen" can never be duplicated. Not by Oldominion; not by anybody. They exist solely in a pre-millenial bubble filled with hot-knife smoke and Dick's wrappers.

Back in my day I had to walk a mile and a half, uphill, in pouring rain, just to get to the studio.

No really. And weighed down by an 18 pack of PBR this was no simple task.

See, this was when the Oldominion house was in Bothell (a shitty suburb of Seattle), and I was living on Capitol Hill (downtown area). I had to catch the bus out that way if I wanted to make music and drink beer with these guys on my weekends off from school. After transferring no fewer than 3 times, the bus would drop me off at the bottom of this huge hill. And of course, they lived on top. Way over the top in fact.

This was back in 2001, soon after the release of One, and naturally, we wanted to get a head start on "Two" (or whatever). This song was from that first session we had.

Eight years later, it's still burning a hole in a CD-R, waiting to be heard by someone...anyone who would appreciate it.

Produced by yours truly and the MCs are as follows: Pegee 13, Smoke, Anax, Destro and Pale Soul.

Darren is the dude.

If you haven't heard Hyena and Seattle Suicide Riots, you haven't heard shit. Pure creativity. Dark, heavy ass, underground hip-hop.

O.K., really dark.

Thanks to him and Rob Castro (ATB studios/Grayskul), Seattle Suicide Riots keep it real as anybody in the Northwest (in my opinion). Grimy too.

And I don't know about you all (whomever that is), but I grew up on some grimy hip hop: Black Moon, Blahzay Blahzay, Jeru, Gravediggaz, Co-Flow. Hip-hop wasn't supposed to be aesthetically soothing.

Taco Neck-Bailengua

I'm surrounded by Latin music. My wife listens to it pretty much exclusively. Some I love; some I loathe.

Either way, at some point in my musical career it was inevitable that I would give it a try. Or at least bring elements of it into my bag of tricks (or whatever).

Here's an instrumental track I did along those lines. I named it "Bailengua", which doesn't mean anything in Spanish (as far as I know), but is sort of a hybrid of the words bailar and lengua....dance and tongue.

Also it kind of sounds like the word bilingual (which I am not).

Snafu-Everything I Have (Digi-Single)

So, my friend and fellow Oldominionite Snafu made an album. A great album. An album that would go down in history as one of the greatest in the history of Northwest Hip-Hop, had it gone as according to the original plan.

It didn't.

The album has been collecting digital dust for at least a couple of years now and Snafu has subsequently quit making music.

Well, I, not being able to accept the fact that this album will likely never see the light of day, felt it was my duty to deliver at least some of Snafu's lost opus to the world.

Given the blanket authortization of "I don't give a fuck what you do with it", I am able to present to you the "Everything I Have" Digi-Single.
